The Calypso Orchid (Calypso bulbosa) appears in early Spring and is found in the shade of cool, moist forests. Its bulb-like corms are found below ground or just barely covered by mosses and moist forest litter. It is especially sensitive to disturbance as the bulb is easily dislodged. The Calypso Orchid pollinates by deception in that it attracts insects which it does not nourish.
For I am Calypso ( By Charles Harkins)
I smile as I dance to the beat, with the lush green moss tickling my feet. Tucked away in the forest so deep, where glimpses of the sun for the dark they will defeat. I look around and see my friends, as they reach out with color not allowing to blend. Purple and red as to show on our heads, but green at our feet as we ready for bed. Sometimes alone, but many to gather, to impart my beauty on groups of others. Fragrance is in the air as I sense my brothers, as we all prepare to reach above our covers. Shooting upwards to the rays of light, for we all will dance within your sight. For I am Calypso this you should know, so come where I live and watch the show.
